Camp American Legion

Lake Tomahawk WI · family & survivors

A free Northwoods respite camp in Lake Tomahawk run by the American Legion Department of Wisconsin, with accessible cabins, dining, recreation and physical therapy facilities. Open to Wisconsin residents who are honorably discharged veterans or currently serving members of any branch, along with their spouses or partners and children 18 and under, and to families of the fallen. Stays are completely free, funded by donations; admission is by written application to the camp office (caloffice@wilegion.org).

Camp Hometown Heroes

Grafton WI · family & survivors

Free weeklong overnight summer camp for children ages 7-17 who have lost a parent, sibling or primary caregiver who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Trauma-informed grief programming is combined with normal camp activities at Turning Rivers in Campbellsport, Wisconsin, and about 200 children attend each year; the camp is free to families and is American Camping Association accredited. Running since 2013, it is now a program of the Grafton-based nonprofit Power of Humans; no phone is published, so contact is by email at team@powerofhumans.org.

All-volunteer nonprofit (a Tampa MOAA chapter initiative) assisting wounded and injured service members and their families receiving care at the James A. Haley VA Polytrauma Rehabilitation Unit. Funds therapeutic programs, travel, lodging, and emergency expenses, and hosts community dinners for patients and families.

North Dakota National Guard Foundation

All-volunteer 501(c)(3) chaired by the North Dakota Adjutant General; its Emergency Relief Fund provides financial assistance to North Dakota National Guard members and their dependents hit by a sudden emergency such as natural disaster, accident, illness, fire, or theft. It also funds ND Guard service member and family support, child and youth, and survivor outreach programs statewide.

North Dakota National Guard Service Member and Family Support Center - Fargo

Regional office of the North Dakota National Guard's Service Member and Family Support program, staffed by a Soldier & Family Readiness Specialist. Helps with ID cards and DEERS enrollment, TRICARE questions, emergency financial assistance, and referrals for legal, mental health, and crisis support. The program serves all statuses - active duty, Guard, Reserve, retired, veterans and family members - across all service branches; Fargo office hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Survivor Outreach Services - North Dakota National Guard

Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) is the Army program for surviving family members of fallen Active, National Guard, and Reserve service members; North Dakota's coordinator is part of the ND Army National Guard's Service Member & Family Support division. Staff connect survivors with grief support and referrals near where they live, including for questions that surface months or years after a loss. Fort Hood Army Community Service (ACS) — including Survivor Outreach Services

Free on-post services for soldiers, retirees, family members and surviving families: Survivor Outreach Services for the families of fallen soldiers, financial readiness counseling, employment readiness and resume help, the Exceptional Family Member Program, family advocacy, and information and referral into community resources. Hours are Mon-Wed and Fri 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thu 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; you need installation access (DoD ID or a visitor pass) to reach the building, so separated veterans without an ID should call first.

Fort Hood Army Fisher House (Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center)

Fort Hood area · Killeen TX · free lodging for families of hospitalized patients

A free place for the family of a service member, retiree or veteran to stay while their loved one is getting inpatient or extended outpatient care at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center on Fort Hood. There is no charge to the family. Rooms are assigned by referral from the hospital and by the house manager, and installation access (DoD ID or a visitor pass) is required to reach the house.

Veteran Equine Partnership workshops at the ranch teaching horsemanship skills — work that helps release tension, build a working relationship with a horse, and improve communication and trust. The ranch describes it as 'a free event to all Veterans and their family members,' and family members are welcomed alongside veterans. The ranch also runs separate Caregiver Workshops, a Women's Veteran Equine Partnership, and a one-on-one horsemanship program. Snacks and drinks are provided. Space is limited and RSVP is required.

Free help for the family member or friend caring for a veteran: the local caregiver support coordinator arranges in-home help, respite care, skills training, counseling and peer support, and walks caregivers through applying for VA's caregiver assistance programs. Serves caregivers of veterans enrolled with VA Central Texas; phone intake, no walk-in office published.
