Free equine-assisted therapy and horsemanship program for military veterans and active-duty service members, running at Polk County's Jester Park Equestrian Center since 2016. Two options: a six-week Thursday-evening co-ed ground horsemanship session, and an eight-week Friday one-on-one draft-horse carriage-driving program; some sessions are run alongside licensed therapists and VA professionals. Proof of service is required (DD214, VA Veteran Health ID card, or military USID), and registration is by phone or email through the equestrian center office.

It runs a 24/7 phone line that connects callers to its own crisis response team or a board member, and operates the Guardian Response Unit (G.R.U.), a converted ambulance fitted out as a mobile mental-health and resource center that travels to events, armories and homes around Iowa. Other programs include therapy assistance requests, financial and funeral assistance, Gold Star family support, care packages, and outreach with food, clothing, household goods and job placement; no fee is stated for any of it.

Florida 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving combat veterans and their significant others through a free five-day Accelerated Wellness Program for post-traumatic stress. Therapies include Accelerated Resolution Therapy, iRest, adaptive yoga, and equine therapy. Lodging, meals, and transportation during the program are provided.

Fargo VA's suicide prevention coordinators and case managers connect veterans in emotional or mental health crisis to counseling and ongoing behavioral health care, and provide free gun safety locks. In a crisis you can also go directly to the Fargo VA medical center no matter your discharge status or whether you're enrolled in VA health care, or call 988 and select 1 any time.

Free, confidential counseling outside the VA hospital system: individual and group therapy for PTSD, depression and military sexual trauma, couples and family counseling, bereavement support, and substance-use and homeless referrals. Eligibility is broader than VA health care — combat and other qualifying veterans, service members, and certain family members can be seen without being enrolled in VA health care. Austin TX · Travis County 24/7 crisis line + walk-in psychiatric emergency center
Integral Care is the local mental health authority for Travis County; its helpline answers 24 hours a day for emotional distress, suicidal thoughts and substance use, and can dispatch a mental health professional to someone in crisis (toll-free 844-398-8252; TTY 512-703-1395). Psychiatric Emergency Services at 1165 Airport Blvd, in the Richard E. Hopkins Behavioral Health Building, second floor, is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for walk-ins, and no VA enrollment or referral is needed. Integral Care states crisis services are available regardless of ability to pay, but this is not a free clinic — it runs a sliding fee scale, bills Medicaid, Medicare and private insurance, charges co-pays, and offers charity care to people who cannot pay.
