Peterson Space Force Base at a glance

Peterson Space Force Base is a space and defense headquarters community on the eastern side of Colorado Springs. Space Base Delta 1 provides installation and combat service support to space organizations and geographically separate mission partners. Publicly identified partners include North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command. The base also shares runway operations with Colorado Springs Airport.

Peterson's roots are in Colorado Springs Army Air Base, established at the municipal airport in April 1942. It was renamed that December for Lieutenant Edward Peterson. After several postwar changes, the installation supported air defense and later space organizations. Its present identity combines a local headquarters community with support responsibilities extending to other installations, including Cheyenne Mountain and Pituffik.

Installation support is distinct from an operational space mission

Space Base Delta 1 provides infrastructure, combat support and installation services for Space Force and joint mission partners at Peterson and other assigned locations. That support role is different from the particular operational mission of a receiving tenant organization. Confirm the unit and workplace when discussing an assignment rather than treat every Peterson posting as the same kind of space-operations job.

Peterson developed from Colorado Springs Army Air Base in 1942, at the municipal airport. It was named for Lieutenant Edward Peterson that year and became a Space Force base in 2021. Colorado Springs also contains several other military installations. The official Delta 1 history notes that Schriever received a separate host, Space Base Delta 41, in 2025; nearby sites and historically shared support should not be mistaken for one current installation organization.

Match Peterson housing with the actual receiving site

Tierra Vista Communities owns and manages Peterson’s privatized family housing. The Military Housing Office provides official application and community-housing guidance, while the private manager handles the lease and residence-specific arrangements. A housing referral, an available home and a confirmed possession date are separate milestones in the move.

The housing page directs families to the school liaison for local education information. Use the actual address to establish the assigned school, records requirements and transportation rather than assume a district from a Colorado Springs label. Unaccompanied housing is described separately from family homes. Because the regional military community includes Peterson, Schriever, Fort Carson and the Academy, verify that the housing application, daily duty location and family service contacts all relate to the actual assignment.

Peterson’s medical group is an outpatient provider

The 21st Medical Group provides primary care and outpatient support to the Peterson patient population. The installation guide states that Peterson has no emergency services on base and identifies regional hospital options, including Evans Army Community Hospital at Fort Carson and civilian facilities in Colorado Springs. The existence of nearby military care does not make every facility the receiving provider for every patient.

Before arrival, clarify the primary-care transfer, specialist referrals and prescription arrangements for each household member. The guide describes MHS GENESIS access for clinical information and related functions; use the receiving medical team’s current instructions to complete enrollment and records transfer. If recurring appointments will be at another installation or in the community, include that journey when comparing homes and planning transportation.

Planning for this location
