Buckley Space Force Base

Buckley Space Force Base at a glance

Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora, Colorado, supports a global missile warning and tracking mission. Space Base Delta 2 is the host support organization, and Mission Delta 4 is the principal publicly identified space mission partner. The installation also hosts Colorado Air National Guard aviation, Army National Guard organizations, Navy Reserve activities and the Air Reserve Personnel Center.

This range of organizations gives Buckley a multi-service character without making it an officially designated joint base. Its history includes Army Air Forces training during World War II, service as Naval Air Station Denver and a long Air National Guard period. It returned to active Air Force status in 2000 and later became a Space Force installation while retaining other service components.

Missile warning and a broad mission-partner community

Space Base Delta 2 provides Buckley’s installation-support role, including support to Mission Delta 4’s missile-warning and tracking mission. Other major partners named in the official overview include the Colorado Air National Guard’s 140th Wing, Army National Guard organizations, Navy Reserve Center Denver and the Air Reserve Personnel Center. The base has a broad service mix even though it is not formally designated a joint base.

The installation is in Aurora, within the wider Denver metropolitan area. Confirm the receiving organization and service-specific sponsor process rather than assume the Space Force name alone identifies the member’s command or arrival arrangements.

Aurora Public Schools serve the family-housing community

Hunt’s Buckley Family Housing manages privatized homes, while the Military Housing Office provides official application and community-housing assistance. The housing page describes shared facilities including trails, playgrounds and a community room. Availability, the offered residence and current lease requirements should be confirmed with the manager before the move is tied to a tentative housing date.

The Air Force page identifies Aurora Public Schools as serving the Buckley Family Housing community. Confirm the assigned school and transfer requirements for the actual residence, particularly when comparing an installation home with another Denver-area address. Unaccompanied housing is a distinct process, and a member arriving through the Guard, Reserve or another service should clarify the applicable arrangement with the sponsor. A broad regional military community does not create identical eligibility or housing instructions for everyone.

The medical group provides ambulatory care

The 460th Medical Group supports Space Base Delta 2 and Buckley mission partners through outpatient medical and dental care. The installation guide describes family practice, pediatrics, optometry, mental health, laboratory and pharmacy services, with some functions limited to active-duty patients. It explicitly states that the facility has no emergency department.

Services unavailable on base are provided through the relevant care network. Establish the receiving primary-care relationship and clarify specialist-referral and prescription transfers before ending care at the previous location. Registration and clinical enrollment are practical arrival tasks for each eligible patient, rather than assumptions that follow automatically from the member’s assignment. Include community appointments in the housing and transportation decision when recurring care will be elsewhere in the metropolitan area.

Before you arrive

Use these questions with your sponsor or gaining organization. They are a starting point for planning, including assignments, courses and training periods that differ from a routine permanent change of station.

1. Confirm the organization, duration and reporting instructions shown on your orders. Ask which office handles your arrival.
2. Clarify lodging and housing arrangements before booking. Ask about availability, required approvals and how to handle a late arrival.
3. Before choosing a home, compare the commute, lease terms, school needs and your household budget. Ask the housing office about the options that apply to your situation.
4. Coordinate household goods and personal travel with the appropriate transportation office. Keep orders, receipts and important family records together.
5. Make a short list of contacts for medical care, schools, childcare and family support, where applicable to your assignment.
